The book treats fatherhood as an ordinary-life path of spiritual growth. Its distinctive contribution relative to the wiki’s existing fatherhood material (fatherhood-as-vocation, built on Stupple’s secular, Popperian account) is an explicitly religious frame: correction, provision, and work are all occasions for the father’s own formation.
Correction as a mirror
English: “the most unpleasant part of being a father is having to correct the children. But we all add that, even so, it is a task that cannot be delegated and is indispensable.”
He diagnoses what lies under his own anger: “Es la impaciencia”, “Es la pereza de sentarme a dar un pequeño paso tras otro”, and “En el fondo no busco su bien sino mi comodidad. (impatience; laziness about taking one small step after another; at bottom I seek my comfort, not their good.) Each fault maps to a virtue to grow:
English: “If I had a greater attitude of service, perhaps the disorder in the house would sometimes be fixed with my help and my silence rather than with scoldings and punishments. If instead of ranting I applied the same punishment, but serenely, I would gain in meekness.”
(Their whole being is attentive and moldable, and will be molded by what we, their parents, show them.)
Masculine, spiritual, practical
He asks fathers to be “profundamente masculinos pero reciamente espirituales”, transmitting serenity and patience, and recalls his own father explaining illness scientifically (“cuando entendí que los virus tienen un ciclo, aprendí a tener más paciencia”), calling it “un acercamiento práctico y sereno.”
Work, family and the “double track”
English: “the husband must move on a double track. On one hand he must strive humanly to provide the home as much material well-being as he can… but reaching the summit on that track does not mean having even begun the other path, the spiritual one.”
English: “the firm lives on what it does not produce, because it lives on the human and moral capital that is born and strengthened only in the family.”
Generosity is defined as “decirnos a nosotros mismos que no en algunas cosas para decir sí a la atención de nuestros hijos”, and it overcomes “el miedo a tener hijos.”
Operative faith
English: “Operative faith, that priest told me, is putting into every project all human means as if there were no supernatural means, and all supernatural means as if there were no human means.”
Competence is demanded but not for vanity: “proponerse ser el mejor en su campo, pero no por vanidad sino para garantizar su sostenimiento económico”. Peace comes from “el abandono en las manos de Dios”; planning only from current resources “no llegaríamos a ningún lado ni emprenderíamos nada.” Also: “Es necesario meditar sobre nuestra propia muerte.
Two routes to the same duty
Stupple derives the father’s duty from epistemology (children as knowledge-creators); Cruz Rivas from virtue and grace. Both reject rule-enforcement as the core of fathering and treat the father’s own growth as part of the job. See fatherhood-as-vocation for the extended comparison. The mortality line also echoes mortality-awareness-and-urgency.
