God at the Center and the Idolatry of Expectations

Scope: Jacques Philippe’s argument, from La oración, camino de amor, that misplaced ultimate expectations (of work, people, success, sensation) produce bitterness and loss of freedom, and that a correct center re-orders every relationship. Spanish quotes are from the Kindle highlights; English renderings are mine.

The ordering claim

English: “Human existence finds its complete balance and beauty only if it has God at its center.”

English: “When God is at the center, everything finds its proper place.”

His reasoning is about distance: giving God absolute priority over “trabajo, relaciones humanas, etc.” is “la única manera de establecer un orden justo respecto a las cosas, poniendo una sana distancia que permite salvaguardar la libertad interior y la unidad en nuestra vida”. The failure modes on either side are “indiferencia, negligencia” or “apegamiento y la dispersión en inquietudes inútiles” (indifference and neglect, or attachment and scattering).

How misplaced expectation turns into resentment

The causal chain in the highlights:

  1. We need goods only God can give (value, security, unconditional love).

English: “But God must remain the center, and we must not demand of a poor, limited, imperfect human creature that she provide what only God can give us.”

(Idols disappoint; we often end up hating what we once adored.)

A spiritual account of the hedonic treadmill

The pattern (expect too much, receive too little, grow bitter) is structurally close to what hedonic-treadmill-and-enough and identity-performance-trap describe in secular terms. Philippe’s distinctive move is to locate the fix upstream: not lower expectations of everything, but redirecting the unconditional expectation to a single non-human source so that human relationships can be asked for only what they can give. Whether that redirect is warranted is a faith claim, not an empirical one.

Dios basta.” (If I find my happiness and peace in God, I will be able to give much to my neighbor, and also to accept him as he is… God is enough.)

Sensation as a substitute for meaning

English: “When meaning is missing, we try to replace it with sensation. ‘Fill your tank with sensations!’ says a recent car ad. But it is a dead end that produces only frustrations, that is, self-destruction and violence. A thousand satisfactions do not make a happiness…”

Art and creativity

He applies the same diagnosis to culture: contemporary art is “falto cruelmente de inspiración” while humanity has “tanta sed de belleza”, and only “una renovación de fe y oración” can restore the sources of creativity, as with Fra Angélico, Rembrandt and Bach. This is an assertion in the highlights, not an argued case.
