Humility, Poverty and Identity as Beloved Child

Scope: What Jacques Philippe’s La oración, camino de amor says prayer reveals about the self: a two-sided truth (real sin and fragility; unalterable belovedness), the value of experienced poverty, and humility as “carrying the weight of truth”. Quotes are Spanish Kindle highlights with my English renderings.

Self-knowledge only “in the light of God”

English: “Man can truly know himself only in the light of God. All he can know of himself through human means (life experience, psychology, human sciences) is not negligible. But that gives him only limited and partial knowledge of his being.”

The negative half: before God “no hay ya mentiras posibles, no hay escapatoria ni justificación, nada de máscaras” (no lies, escape, justification or masks), and we face our “heridas, fragilidades, incoherencias, egoísmos, dureza de corazón”. He treats this as diagnostic: “no hay curación sin conocimiento de la enfermedad. Solo la verdad libera.”

The positive half is the anchor:

English: “I am a stained being, in urgent need of purification and conversion. Yet there is in me something absolutely pure and intact: the love God has for me as my Creator and Father, the foundation of my identity, of my inalienable condition as a much-loved son.”

English: “God’s love is personal and personalizing. Each of us has every right to say: God loves me like no one else in the world!”

He adds a guardrail: this is “objeto de fe y de esperanza más que una posesión de la que servirse en provecho propio”, lived “en una gran humildad y pobreza”, yet real enough to give “la libertad y seguridad interiores que necesitamos para afrontar la vida con confianza.”

Same structure as the wiki's identity-without-performance thread

Philippe’s two-sided self-knowledge (guilty and unconditionally loved) is the theological parent of the identity move found in burke-masters-mike-sweeney (“you never have to earn his love”) and the antidote to identity-performance-trap. Compare also the secular route to a non-contingent self in wholehearted-living-and-self-worth.

Prayer forces the encounter, which is why people flee it

English: “Prayer places us inexorably before what we truly are.”

English: “many people give up prayer, flee solitude and silence, because they fear this inevitable encounter with themselves that seems unavoidable in prayer.”

Poverty as opportunity

English: “To pray is an act of hope: it is to recognize that we need God, that we cannot get through life’s challenges alone, that we count on God more than on our own resources and talents.”

English: “My poverty is then not a problem but an opportunity.”

What humility is

English: “Humility does not consist in having humble thoughts but in carrying the weight of the truth.”

It “no se impone”; it is “el fruto de un desprendimiento de todas las pretensiones humanas, de todas las reivindicaciones del «ego»“. Two corollaries: “Nuestras buenas obras no nos confieren ningún «derecho»”, and love is a “victoria de la debilidad”: “Amar quiere decir que se acoge sin defensa al otro que viene a nosotros”.

Healthy self-love

Not self-contempt

The highlights include harsh-sounding lines (“Abájate y despréciate a ti mismo”). Read the self-abasement quotes as quoted tradition, not as his conclusion.

Purification is internal: “El hombre no se purifica desde el exterior, sino desde dentro”, and the only demand on us is receptive: “Se nos pide recibir, eso es todo.”
